Chemical Reactor & Process Vessel Transport Services
Chemical reactors are among the heaviest and most dimensionally challenging items moved in the process industries. A hydrocracking reactor for a petroleum refinery may weigh two to three million pounds, stand 200 feet tall on-site, and arrive at the refinery in multiple reactor shells that each require hydraulic platform trailers with dozens of axle lines. An autoclave reactor for a specialty chemical plant may weigh 80,000 to 300,000 pounds and require a permit-only RGN or multi-axle lowboy configuration. Even smaller batch reactors and CSTR vessels, once mounted on skid frames with instrumentation and piping, can exceed legal size and weight limits requiring oversize permits.
R&RM LLC has transported process vessels and reactor equipment for refineries, chemical plants, specialty chemical manufacturers, and industrial gas facilities since 2011. We handle the full range — from single-vessel shipments on standard multi-axle lowboys to coordinated multi-load project deliveries for grassroots plant construction. Our team manages oversize and overweight permit acquisition in every state we transit, coordinates escort vehicles, and works directly with your project logistics team to align deliveries with installation crane and rigging windows.
Types of Reactor Vessels We Transport
Hydrocracking and Hydrotreating Reactors
Hydrocracking reactors and hydrotreater reactor vessels are the largest fixed-bed catalytic reactors in petroleum refining. A heavy oil hydrocracker reactor shell is a thick-walled chrome-moly or 2.25Cr-1Mo-0.25V alloy steel vessel designed to operate at pressures up to 3,000 psi and temperatures above 800°F. These reactor shells are fabricated at heavy equipment shops — typically in the Gulf Coast, Midwest, or West Coast — and transported to the refinery site by barge where water is available, or by road where barge is not practical.
Road transport of a large hydrocracking reactor shell — typically 12 to 18 feet in diameter and 70 to 120 feet in length, weighing 1.5 to 3 million pounds — requires a dolly train configuration with up to 24 or more axle lines of hydraulic platform trailer and dedicated corridor route analysis. Smaller hydrotreater reactor vessels in the 50,000 to 400,000-pound range are routinely moved on eight- to fourteen-axle hydraulic platform configurations and require overweight load permits in most states. R&RM LLC coordinates these moves with specialized heavy lift and transport subcontractors for the largest vessels and handles all mid-range reactor moves in-house.
Fixed-Bed Catalytic Reactors
Fixed-bed catalytic reactors are used in methanol synthesis, ammonia synthesis, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, and a wide range of refinery and chemical plant process units. The reactor shell itself is a pressure vessel — typically a cylindrical shell with dished heads fabricated from carbon steel, stainless steel, or alloy steel. Sizes range from small pilot-scale vessels a few feet in diameter to full-scale industrial reactors 10 to 16 feet in diameter and 60 to 100 feet in length.
For transport, reactor shells are typically empty of catalyst and internals, which are shipped separately. Even an empty catalyst bed reactor of modest size — say 5 feet in diameter and 40 feet in length — weighs 30,000 to 80,000 pounds depending on wall thickness and head configuration, putting it solidly in overweight territory for a standard road haul. The cylindrical profile and length of reactor shells often requires a stretch lowboy or RGN trailer with a long rear section to keep the overall transport length within permit requirements. R&RM LLC selects trailer configurations based on the reactor's diameter, length, weight, and the clearance requirements at the origin and destination sites.
Polymerization Reactors
Polymerization reactors — used in the production of polyethylene, polypropylene, PVC, styrene-butadiene rubber, and other polymer products — vary enormously in design and scale. A large loop reactor or slurry reactor for a polyolefin plant is a specialized piece of pressure equipment that may weigh 100,000 to 400,000 pounds assembled. Autoclave reactors used in high-pressure LDPE production are massive thick-walled cylinders operating at pressures exceeding 30,000 psi — their wall thickness alone makes them extraordinarily heavy relative to their volume.
Polymerization reactor transport often involves tight destination site constraints. A reactor installation at a grassroots polyolefin complex may require delivery to a specific bay of a building under construction, within a window tied to structural steel erection and crane availability. R&RM LLC coordinates delivery sequencing with the general contractor and installation team to arrive when the site is ready and the crane is positioned — not before the steel is up and not after the crane has departed.
Ammonia Synthesis Converters
Ammonia synthesis converters are multi-bed catalytic reactors operating at extreme pressure — typically 150 to 300 bar — and moderate temperature. The converter shell is a thick-walled pressure vessel engineered for the operating environment, with internal gas distribution systems, catalyst beds, and heat exchange internals. A large ammonia converter from manufacturers like Haldor Topsoe, KBR, or Casale may weigh 600,000 to 2 million pounds including the shell, internals, and any attached nozzles and manholes.
Ammonia plant reactors typically travel by barge or heavy transport vehicle depending on site access. When road transport is required, the route survey must identify all bridge weight limitations, overhead clearance constraints, and any turns or intersections that a dolly train configuration cannot negotiate. The Louisiana Gulf Coast, the Gulf Coast of Texas, and the upper Midwest ammonia belt are the most common destinations for large ammonia converter shipments, and R&RM LLC has experience navigating permit and logistics requirements in all of these corridors.
Autoclave Reactors
Autoclave reactors — used in specialty chemical production, pharmaceutical manufacturing, carbon fiber production, and high-pressure polymer synthesis — are engineered for extreme pressure and often extreme temperature. A production-scale autoclave reactor may be 3 to 8 feet in diameter and 15 to 40 feet in length, with a wall thickness measured in inches and a total weight of 40,000 to 500,000 pounds depending on operating conditions and volume.
Autoclave reactors are typically manufactured at specialty pressure vessel shops in the United States, Germany, Italy, South Korea, and Japan, and transported to the end-user facility. Domestic road transport of autoclave reactors commonly involves multi-axle lowboy or RGN trailer configurations and overweight permits in every transit state. The nozzle and manhole configurations on autoclave reactors sometimes create width or height clearance challenges that require load-specific route surveys to resolve before the permit can be issued.
Continuous Stirred-Tank Reactors (CSTR)
Continuous stirred-tank reactors are the workhorse of liquid-phase chemical processing — used in pharmaceutical intermediate synthesis, fine chemical production, paint and resin manufacturing, and food ingredient processing. Individual CSTR vessels are often smaller than refinery-scale reactors, but they frequently ship as skid-mounted assemblies with agitator motors, condensers, pumps, instrumentation, and piping that substantially increase the overall weight and dimensions of the transport unit.
A skid-mounted CSTR train for a specialty chemical plant may measure 8 to 14 feet wide, 12 to 15 feet tall, and 40 to 60 feet in length, putting it solidly in oversize territory for width and height. R&RM LLC is experienced in transporting skid-mounted process equipment of this type, coordinating the oversize permits, planning escort routes, and delivering within the access constraints of chemical plant sites that were not designed with large transport vehicles in mind.
Transport Equipment for Reactor Vessels
Multi-Axle Lowboys and RGN Trailers
Most reactor vessels in the 30,000 to 400,000-pound range travel on multi-axle lowboy or removable gooseneck (RGN) trailers. The lowboy's low deck height — typically 18 to 24 inches off the ground — is critical for reactor vessels with large diameters, where every inch of deck height directly reduces the available vertical clearance for bridge crossings. A reactor vessel 8 feet in diameter on a 20-inch lowboy deck sits with its centerline at roughly 68 inches — the overhead clearance at a 16-foot-6-inch bridge becomes a tight calculation when the combined height is 10 feet 8 inches to the vessel crown.
For very wide or very heavy vessels that exceed the capacity of conventional multi-axle lowboys, hydraulic platform trailers (also called modular or platform trailers) provide additional axle count to distribute the load within legal axle group weight limits and can be configured in width to accommodate vessels too wide for a standard 8-foot-6-inch deck. R&RM LLC works with specialized equipment owners for the largest reactor transport requirements and handles all permitting, route planning, and escort coordination regardless of the trailer configuration required.
Route Survey and Bridge Analysis
Reactor vessels combine weight, width, height, and length in ways that make route planning complex. A reactor vessel may be within the state's overweight permit limits but still require a custom route to avoid bridges with insufficient ratings for the gross combination weight. It may be within height limits but require utility line lifts along segments of the route where power lines cross at marginal clearance. The route survey for a large reactor vessel move typically takes place several weeks before the scheduled transport date, and results in a documented route that is submitted as part of the permit application.
Project Delivery Logistics
Reactor vessel shipments to refineries, chemical plants, and industrial gas facilities are almost always schedule-critical. The delivery window is tied to a crane availability window, a construction sequence, or a plant outage window that cannot shift. Arriving a day late with a reactor shell at a refinery turnaround means a day of crane idle time and a day of shutdown extension — costs that can easily reach six figures per day on a large turnaround project.
R&RM LLC communicates proactively with your project team throughout the permit process and in the days leading up to the move. When permit timing is uncertain — as it can be on superload permits for very heavy vessels — we notify your scheduling team early so alternative planning can begin if needed. When delivery is on track, we confirm delivery windows and estimated arrival times so your rigging crew and crane operator are ready when the load arrives on site.
