Liebherr R Series Excavators — Compact to Mid-Size (R 914–R 938)
Liebherr's R series tracked hydraulic excavators are manufactured in Colmar, France, and are well-regarded for precision hydraulics, operator ergonomics, and robust build quality. The smaller R series models are common on commercial construction, utility, and municipal projects throughout the country:
- R 914 / R 918: Compact production excavators at approximately 32,000–40,000 lbs. RGN or flatbed transport; permit requirements are straightforward in most states. The R 918 is a popular machine for urban utility contractors who value the Liebherr hydraulic system's precision for working around buried infrastructure.
- R 920 / R 926: Mid-compact excavators at approximately 44,000–57,000 lbs. RGN hauling is standard for this range. Oversize permits for width apply in all states; combination vehicle weight may require permit on some Interstate corridors depending on axle configuration.
- R 930 / R 938: Standard production excavators at approximately 66,000–84,000 lbs. These machines are workhorses on road construction, commercial site development, and pipeline projects. Multi-axle RGN configurations handle the weight distribution requirements for this class. Oversize and overweight permits apply in all states transited, with procurement typically requiring 3–5 business days.
Liebherr R Series Excavators — Large Construction Class (R 945–R 980)
Liebherr's larger R series machines are built for high-production earthmoving, quarry bench work, and heavy construction applications. These excavators involve more complex transport logistics:
- R 945 / R 950: Large production excavators at approximately 100,000–110,000 lbs. These machines require heavy multi-axle RGN equipment, full oversize and overweight permits in every state transited, and typically require rear escort vehicles as mandated by state law. Bridge weight clearances must be verified on all routes, including Interstate highways.
- R 960 / R 970: High-production construction excavators at approximately 130,000–155,000 lbs. In this weight class, state DOT advance notification or conditional approval is required in some states before transport can begin. Counterweight removal is frequently necessary to reduce the transport weight and bring axle loads within permit thresholds. We handle all coordination as part of our transport service.
- R 980: Liebherr's largest conventional construction excavator at approximately 186,000 lbs in standard configuration. Transport of an R 980 is a significant logistics project: the counterweight and boom components are removed and shipped as separate loads. We coordinate the sequencing, permit applications, scheduling, and delivery order so all components arrive at the destination ready for reassembly. Advance planning of several weeks is typical for an R 980 move.
Liebherr R 9000 Series Mining Excavators
Liebherr's R 9000 series represents some of the world's largest hydraulic mining excavators, used in large-scale open-pit coal, copper, iron ore, and oil sands operations. Transporting these machines is among the most complex oversize moves in the industry:
- R 9100 / R 9150: Entry-level mining excavators in the Liebherr 9000 series at approximately 200,000–250,000 lbs. These machines are transported in multiple loads after disassembly of the upper structure components. State-by-state route surveys and advance DOT coordination are required for every move.
- R 9200 / R 9250: Mid-range mining excavators at approximately 300,000–400,000 lbs assembled weight. A typical transport project for this class involves 4–6 separate permitted loads for the carbody, upper structure, boom sections, and counterweight stacks. Timing and sequencing are critical so components arrive at the mine site in assembly order.
- R 9350 / R 9400 / R 9800: Liebherr's largest mining excavators, with the R 9800 representing one of the largest hydraulic excavators in the world. Moves at this scale are major projects involving specialized transport equipment, multiple state DOT engagements, extensive route surveys, and detailed project management. R&RM LLC coordinates with customers well in advance on these moves and can manage the logistics from initial planning through final delivery and reassembly support.
Liebherr Crawler Dozers (PR Series)
Liebherr crawler dozers — the PR series — are built in Germany and are known for their hydrostatic drives, which eliminate conventional torque converters and provide smooth, fuel-efficient pushing power. The PR series is common on landfill operations, highway construction, and large site development projects:
- PR 716 / PR 726: Compact crawler dozers at approximately 37,000–54,000 lbs. RGN or flatbed transport; permit requirements are comparable to a mid-size excavator in the same weight class.
- PR 736 / PR 746: Mid-size production dozers at approximately 68,000–93,000 lbs. Standard oversize and overweight permits required in all states. Wide track configurations common on soft-ground applications may increase overall machine width, affecting permit category.
- PR 756 / PR 776: Large Liebherr dozers at approximately 120,000–165,000 lbs. These machines require heavy multi-axle RGN equipment, full oversize and overweight permits, and rear escorts in most states. The PR 776 is one of the largest crawler dozers in the Liebherr lineup and approaches R 9000 territory in terms of transport complexity.
Liebherr Wheel Loaders (L Series)
Liebherr wheel loaders range from compact machines used in urban construction and recycling to large L 586 loaders found in quarry and port operations. Most Liebherr wheel loaders transport well on RGN trailers, with the bucket or forks removed and stowed separately:
- L 506 through L 526: Compact and mid-size Liebherr loaders at 20,000–50,000 lbs. These machines are commonly transported alongside other equipment on combination loads. Rental companies frequently move this size range between yard locations.
- L 542 through L 566: Production wheel loaders at 55,000–85,000 lbs. Standard oversize and overweight permits required in most states. These loaders are common on aggregate, construction, and road materials operations throughout the country.
- L 576 / L 580 / L 586: Large Liebherr wheel loaders at 90,000–115,000 lbs. Heavy multi-axle RGN transport required; oversize and overweight permits in all states. Port terminal and large quarry operations use this size range extensively, and moves often originate or terminate at port facilities with specialized loading constraints.
Liebherr Material Handlers (LH Series)
Liebherr material handlers are purpose-built machines for scrap yards, recycling facilities, timber yards, and port terminals. The LH series uses the same crawler or rubber tire undercarriage as the R series excavators but is fitted with an elevated cab and extended boom for material handling. Transport considerations are similar to equivalent-weight R series machines, with the added dimension of the elevated cab structure that may affect overall height and load securement approach:
- LH 22 / LH 26 / LH 30: Compact material handlers at 49,000–66,000 lbs. RGN transport with standard oversize permits.
- LH 40 / LH 60: Mid-size production material handlers at 88,000–132,000 lbs. Multi-axle RGN with oversize and overweight permits in all states.
- LH 110 / LH 150: Large material handlers at 242,000–330,000 lbs. These are major transport projects requiring disassembly, multiple permitted loads, and significant advance coordination with state DOT offices.
Transport Methods for Liebherr Equipment
- RGN (Removable Gooseneck) Hauling: The standard transport method for most tracked Liebherr excavators and dozers in the R 914 through R 960 range. Drive-on loading via the removable gooseneck keeps the machine stable and eliminates the need for external craning equipment at most sites.
- Flatbed Transport: Smaller Liebherr wheel loaders and compact excavators under approximately 40,000 lbs can be transported on flatbed trailers, sometimes combined with smaller companion equipment on the same load.
- Oversize & Overweight Transport: All Liebherr R 930 and larger machines require multi-state oversize and overweight permits. We handle all permit procurement, route planning, and state DOT coordination as part of every transport arrangement.
- Pilot Car Escorts: Required by state law when loads exceed defined width or weight thresholds — which applies to most Liebherr machines in the R 945 class and above. Our permit and escort coordination service arranges all required pilot car vehicles for every state on the route.
- Multi-Load Disassembly Projects: Liebherr R 9000 series mining excavators and large LH material handlers are transported in multiple disassembled loads. We coordinate permitting, scheduling, and delivery sequencing for each component load so the machine can be reassembled efficiently at the destination.
