Off-Highway Haul Truck Transport
Mining haul trucks and articulated dump trucks are among the heaviest, widest pieces of equipment that travel American roads — and moving them from one mine site, quarry, or construction project to another requires careful planning, specific trailer configurations, and permits in every state along the route. R&RM LLC has been hauling oversized construction and mining equipment since 2011, and off-highway haul trucks are a regular part of our load mix.
The range of equipment we move is broad. On the smaller end, an articulated dump truck like a Caterpillar 730 or Volvo A25 weighs around 20,000 kg empty and fits on a standard multi-axle lowboy with width permits. On the larger end, a Caterpillar 777G rigid haul truck weighs roughly 67,000 kg empty — and that's before any disassembly for body, tires, or cab. We assess each machine individually, select the right trailer, and coordinate every permit needed for the specific route. Articulated Dump Trucks
Articulated haul trucks (ADTs) are the most commonly transported type of off-highway truck because they are purpose-built for off-road conditions and must be transported on public roads between job sites. They are widely used in road construction, dam building, quarry operations, and large site development projects.
Caterpillar Articulated Haul Trucks
Caterpillar's articulated haul trucks carry payload ratings from 24 tons to 45 tons. These machines weigh between 20,000 and 37,000 kg empty and are typically transported with the body lowered and pinned on a three- or four-axle lowboy. Width with the cab mirrors removed generally runs 10 to 11 feet, requiring an oversize width permit in most states.
- Cat 725 / 725C2: 24-ton payload, approximately 20,000 kg empty, common on mid-size construction sites
- Cat 730 / 730C2: 28-ton payload, approximately 24,000 kg empty, one of the most common ADTs in North America
- Cat 740 / 740 GC: 40-ton payload, approximately 30,000 kg empty, used on larger earthmoving projects
- Cat 745: 45-ton payload, approximately 37,000 kg empty, requires a multi-axle lowboy for proper weight distribution
Volvo Articulated Haul Trucks
Volvo Construction Equipment is one of the largest ADT manufacturers in the world. The A-series trucks are found at mine sites, quarries, and major infrastructure projects across all 48 states.
- Volvo A25G / A25H: 25-ton payload, approximately 19,000 kg empty
- Volvo A30G / A30H: 30-ton payload, approximately 22,000 kg empty
- Volvo A35G / A35H: 35-ton payload, approximately 27,000 kg empty
- Volvo A40G / A40H: 40-ton payload, approximately 33,000 kg empty, large single-lane oversize load
- Volvo A45G: 45-ton payload, approximately 37,000 kg empty
- Volvo A60H: 60-ton payload, approximately 50,000 kg empty, among the largest ADTs made — may require partial disassembly for some state routes
Bell Equipment Articulated Haul Trucks
Bell Equipment's B-series ADTs are popular in aggregate, quarry, and heavy construction in the Southern and Eastern United States. Payload capacities run from 23 to 60 tons.
- Bell B30E: 30-ton payload, approximately 23,000 kg empty
- Bell B40E: 40-ton payload, approximately 31,000 kg empty
- Bell B45E / B50E: 45- to 50-ton payload models used in major earthworks
Doosan / HD Hyundai DA Series
The Doosan DA30-5 and DA45-5 articulated dump trucks are commonly moved alongside Doosan excavators when mine sites and construction fleets are relocating. See our dedicated Doosan equipment hauling page for full transport details on the DA series.
Rigid-Frame Mining Haul Trucks
Rigid-frame haul trucks are the workhorses of open-pit mining. Unlike ADTs, these machines run on a solid rigid frame and are designed exclusively for off-highway use. Moving them on public roads requires more planning because of their extreme width, height, and weight.
Caterpillar Rigid Haul Trucks
Caterpillar's rigid haul truck line covers payloads from 40 tons to the ultra-class 400-ton 797F. Smaller models in the 770–777 range are moved regularly on public roads; larger models require disassembly or route-specific superload permits and may be limited to certain state highway systems.
- Cat 770G: 40-ton payload, approximately 47,000 kg empty, routinely moved on multi-axle lowboys
- Cat 772G: 55-ton payload, approximately 55,000 kg empty
- Cat 773G / 773E: 55–60-ton payload, approximately 57,000 kg empty
- Cat 775G: 70-ton payload, approximately 65,000 kg empty
- Cat 777G / 777F: 100-ton payload, approximately 67,000 kg empty — typically requires body, cab, and tires removed for transport
- Cat 785D: 150-ton payload — requires significant disassembly for road transport
Komatsu Rigid Haul Trucks
Komatsu's HD and HM series are widely used in North American quarry and mining operations. The HD325 and HD465 are the most frequently transported models on public roads.
- Komatsu HD325: 35-ton payload, approximately 35,000 kg empty, standard oversize move
- Komatsu HD405: 45-ton payload, approximately 44,000 kg empty
- Komatsu HD465: 55-ton payload, approximately 52,000 kg empty — larger multi-axle lowboy required
- Komatsu HD785: 91-ton payload, approximately 70,000 kg empty — body and tires typically removed for transport
Liebherr and Hitachi Haul Trucks
Liebherr's T-series haul trucks (T 236, T 264, T 274, T 284) and Hitachi's EH series (EH1700, EH3500, EH4000) are found at larger open-pit operations. The T 236 at approximately 41,000 kg empty is the most commonly transported Liebherr model via public roads. Larger models in these lineups require disassembly and are moved as multi-load oversize shipments.
Trailer and Transport Method Selection
Haul truck transport trailer selection depends on the machine's empty weight, width with and without tires, cab height, and destination site access:
- Multi-Axle Lowboy (3–5 axle): The standard choice for articulated haul trucks and smaller rigid trucks under 55,000 kg. Low deck height keeps overall transport height manageable.
- RGN (Removable Gooseneck): Preferred when the machine can self-propel onto the trailer. RGN loading is faster and reduces crane handling costs on machines equipped with working hydraulics.
- Hydraulic Modular Trailer (HMT): For extremely heavy machines where weight must be spread over many axles to satisfy state bridge formula requirements per the FHWA federal bridge formula regulations.
- Disassembly and Multi-Load Move: For large rigid trucks in the Cat 777, HD785, and larger class, the body, tires, and sometimes the cab are removed and shipped separately. This reduces per-load dimensions to transportable levels and avoids superload classification on many state networks.
Permit Requirements for Haul Truck Transport
Off-highway haul trucks almost always trigger oversize load or overweight load permits. Key permit thresholds that apply to most haul truck moves:
- Width: Loads wider than 8.5 feet require an oversize permit in virtually every state. Most haul trucks measure 10 to 16 feet wide in transport configuration.
- Height: Loads taller than 13.5 to 14 feet require permits and may trigger route surveys for bridge and overpass clearances.
- Weight: Single-trip overweight permits are required when the combination vehicle weight exceeds 80,000 lbs. Haul trucks loaded on heavy-duty trailers routinely push well above this threshold.
- Superload: Machines exceeding width of 16 feet or height of 16 feet in many states trigger superload classification, which requires advance route approval from each state DOT, extended permit lead times, and sometimes utility and traffic control coordination.
R&RM LLC handles all permit applications across every state on the route and coordinates pilot car services where dimensions require front and rear escorts. For moves through Georgia, we work directly with the GDOT Special Permit office. Our permit services include permit procurement, pilot car arrangement, route surveys, and travel window planning.
