Industrial Centrifuge & Separator Transport Services
Industrial centrifuges and process separators are precision rotating machines and pressure vessels used across virtually every process industry — oil and gas, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food processing, wastewater treatment, mining, and pulp and paper. They range from compact skid-mounted pharmaceutical bowl centrifuges to massive two-phase and three-phase decanter centrifuges used in oil sands processing, to enormous horizontal pressure vessel separators weighing hundreds of thousands of pounds on upstream oil and gas production pads.
Transport requirements vary enormously across this equipment family. A pharmaceutical decanter centrifuge might ship on a standard flatbed within legal limits. A refinery-scale horizontal vessel separator 10 feet in diameter and 60 feet in length requires a multi-axle lowboy or hydraulic platform trailer, oversize load permits, and potentially a pilot car escort. R&RM LLC handles the full range, from single-unit equipment pickups to coordinated multi-vessel project deliveries for process plant construction and turnaround projects.
Types of Centrifuges and Separators We Transport
Decanter Centrifuges
Decanter centrifuges — also called scroll centrifuges or solid bowl centrifuges — are the workhorse separation machines of heavy industry. A rotating horizontal bowl spins a process slurry at high centrifugal force, separating solids from liquids continuously. Decanters are used in oil sands dewatering, drilling mud treatment, municipal biosolids processing, food starch dewatering, industrial waste treatment, and chemical processing.
Industrial decanters from manufacturers like Alfa Laval, GEA Group, ANDRITZ, Flottweg, and Hiller range from 15,000 to 60,000 pounds depending on bowl diameter and frame construction. Standard bowl diameters range from 14 inches in smaller industrial units to 54 inches and larger in heavy-duty mining and oil sands decanters. Large decanters are typically skid-mounted with drive motors, VFDs, and control panels, and the assembled skid weight often determines trailer selection and permit requirements.
Multiple-decanter installations — common in municipal biosolids dewatering facilities, ethanol plants, and oil sands operations — require coordinated delivery of several units to a single project site. We sequence multi-unit deliveries to match the installation contractor's crane and rigging schedule, avoiding the on-site storage congestion that occurs when all units arrive before the site is ready for them.
Disk-Stack Centrifuges
Disk-stack centrifuges use a stack of closely spaced conical disks inside a rotating bowl to separate fine solids, clarify liquids, or separate two immiscible liquid phases. They are used extensively in dairy processing (cream separation, clarification), vegetable oil refining, beer and wine clarification, pharmaceutical API production, biodiesel processing, and lubricating oil purification.
Disk-stack centrifuges from manufacturers like Alfa Laval, GEA Westfalia, and Andritz Separation are generally more compact than decanter centrifuges but can still be heavy. Large process-scale hermetic centrifuges with their drive frames, bowl assemblies, and enclosures weigh 10,000 to 30,000 pounds. They are precision instruments with tight balance tolerances — the bowl and disk stack must not be subjected to shock loads during transport. Skid-level vibration during loading and transit must be managed by appropriate blocking, bracing, and — for the most sensitive units — transport in their shipping crates with vibration monitoring.
Basket and Peeler Centrifuges
Vertical and horizontal basket centrifuges, also called batch centrifuges or filtering centrifuges, are used in fine chemicals, specialty pharmaceuticals, sugar processing, salt production, and textile dyeing operations. The rotating perforated basket retains the solid cake while mother liquor passes through under centrifugal force. Peeler centrifuges and pusher centrifuges provide continuous or semi-continuous discharge of the dewatered cake.
Basket centrifuges from ANDRITZ, Heinkel, and Siebtechnik Tema are typically 5,000 to 25,000 pounds and transport on standard flatbed trailers within legal limits, though oversize height or width permits may be required for large-diameter vertical basket units with their enclosures intact.
Gas-Liquid Separators and Scrubbers
Gas-liquid separators are pressure vessels used in natural gas production and processing, refinery operations, and chemical plants to separate entrained liquids from gas streams. Two-phase separators remove liquids from gas; three-phase separators separate gas, oil, and water simultaneously. Inlet cyclones, mist extractors, and coalescer packs are internal components that typically remain installed during transport, adding weight and limiting how the vessel can be oriented on the trailer.
Horizontal gas-liquid separators range from small wellhead units 24 inches in diameter by 10 feet in length to large production separators 10 feet in diameter by 50 to 60 feet in length, with weights from 5,000 pounds to over 200,000 pounds. Vessel length rather than weight is often the primary permit trigger for horizontal separators — a separator 60 feet in length on a 50-foot trailer extends far beyond legal length and requires overlength permits in every state the move crosses.
Three-Phase Separators and Treaters
Horizontal three-phase free water knockout vessels and electrostatic treaters used in oil and gas production are among the larger separator types we transport. Production treaters — which use an electric field to coalesce and separate oil from water — can exceed 10 feet in diameter and 60 feet in length, requiring overwidth, overlength, and overweight permits simultaneously. The transformer compartments and electrode grid assemblies inside electrostatic treaters add weight beyond the basic vessel shell weight and must be braced internally before transport to prevent damage to the electrode suspension system.
Hydrocyclones and Cyclone Clusters
Hydrocyclone separators use centrifugal force generated by the liquid's own flow velocity rather than a rotating machine. They are used in mineral processing for classification and desliming, in paper mills for fiber and contaminant removal, in produced water treatment, and in drilling operations for solids control. Individual hydrocyclone cones are small, but multi-stage cyclone cluster assemblies on fabricated steel frames — particularly the large primary cyclone batteries used in mineral processing and produced water systems — can weigh 20,000 to 80,000 pounds assembled and require RGN or lowboy transport with oversize permits.
Industrial Liquid-Liquid Extractors and Coalescers
Liquid-liquid extractors, plate coalescers, and API gravity separators used in refinery wastewater treatment, produced water polishing, and chemical process systems are large fabricated steel vessels that transport like other horizontal process vessels. Coalescer packages incorporating fiber-bed mist eliminators or coalescing media beds are sensitive to orientation changes during transport and typically ship with internal media installed, which must be secured before loading.
Key Transport Considerations for Centrifuges and Separators
Vibration and Shock Sensitivity in Precision Rotating Machines
Decanter centrifuges and disk-stack centrifuges are precision-balanced rotating machines. The bowl assembly — which may rotate at 2,000 to 4,000 RPM in service — is dynamically balanced to tight tolerances by the manufacturer. Road vibration during transport, if transmitted directly to the bowl assembly, can shift the balance weights on older units or stress the welds on the bowl shell. Best practice for shipping bare centrifuge machines without shipping crates is to lock the bowl rotation at the scroll drive (decanters) or at the spindle (disk-stacks) before loading, and to ship on air-ride trailers over rough road segments when possible.
For new equipment direct from the manufacturer, the OEM's shipping department will provide the shipping configuration — typically the machine is shipped with bowl locked, drive coupling disconnected, and in some cases the rotating assembly supported separately from the bowl bearing supports to eliminate the potential for bearing fretting during long-distance transport. We verify shipping configuration requirements with the manufacturer before loading any high-value centrifuge.
Oversize Dimensions: When Permits Are Required
The majority of industrial centrifuge and separator shipments require oversize permits for at least one dimension:
- Width: Skid-mounted decanters with drive motors and control panels often exceed 8 feet 6 inches in width. Horizontal separator vessels 8 feet or more in diameter exceed legal width on any trailer configuration.
- Height: Vertical basket centrifuges and tall scrubber vessels can exceed the 13 foot 6 inch legal height limit when loaded on a standard lowboy trailer, especially if internal components cannot be removed for transport.
- Length: Horizontal separator vessels 30 feet or longer loaded on a 48-foot or 53-foot flatbed, or vessels 50 feet or longer on extended lowboys, generate overlength loads that require permits in most states.
- Weight: Large production separators and heavy centrifuge skids can exceed the 80,000-pound gross vehicle weight limit on standard axle configurations, requiring overweight permits and multi-axle trailer configurations to distribute the load.
Loading and Rigging Considerations
Industrial centrifuges and pressure vessel separators require careful attention to lifting points and center of gravity during loading. Pressure vessels have manufacturer-specified lifting lugs designed for vertical lift from a crane — using these lugs for horizontal loading onto a trailer requires a spreader bar and careful calculation to ensure the lug design loads are not exceeded. Centrifuge machines typically have two-point lifts specified in the installation manual, and the lift configuration must account for the center of gravity offset created by the heavy drive motor at one end.
For equipment being picked up from an operating plant during a turnaround, residual process material in the bowl or vessel must be drained and purged before loading. Our drivers request a safety data sheet for any residual material and a confirmation from the plant safety team that the equipment is safe for highway transport — a standard requirement for equipment coming out of chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, or food processing service.

Project Delivery Coordination
Many centrifuge and separator shipments are part of larger process plant projects where delivery sequence matters. A new ethanol plant receiving five decanter centrifuges needs them delivered in the order the installation crew can set and connect them — not all five at once overwhelming the rigging crew and lay-down area. A refinery turnaround replacement of three gas-liquid separator vessels needs a tight delivery window tied to the crane availability and vessel removal schedule.
R&RM LLC coordinates multi-unit and multi-load deliveries to match your project schedule. We confirm delivery windows with your site superintendent or installation contractor, communicate permit timing constraints that may affect the delivery window, and dispatch equipment to meet your rigging crew's schedule rather than arriving at the convenience of the trucking schedule.
