Types of Aggregate & Quarry Equipment We Transport
Portable & Mobile Jaw Crushers
Track-mounted and wheel-mounted portable jaw crushers are the entry point for most aggregate crushing circuits — receiving blasted rock or demolition material and reducing it to a manageable size for downstream processing. Major portable jaw crusher models we transport include:
- Kleemann Mobicat MC series: Track-mounted jaw crushers from the MC 100 R through the MC 125 Z, weighing 50,000 to 130,000 pounds and measuring 45 to 55 feet long in transport position. The MC 125 Z at 55 feet overlength requires overlength permits in virtually every state.
- Metso Lokotrack LT series: The LT106, LT120, and LT130E jaw crushers range from 60,000 to 130,000 pounds, with transport heights of 11 to 13 feet and widths that require overwidth permits when side conveyors cannot be fully retracted.
- Sandvik QJ series: The QJ241, QJ341, and QJ441 are purpose-designed for highway transport, but the QJ441 at 120,000 pounds approaches overweight permit territory in many states and requires careful axle load management.
- Terex Finlay J-series: Compact jaw crushers in the 40,000 to 80,000 pound range, often transportable on a standard lowboy with overweight permits for heavier models.

Portable & Mobile Cone Crushers
Cone crushers handle secondary and tertiary reduction in aggregate circuits, taking jaw crusher product and reducing it to specified aggregate grades. Portable cone crushers are among the heaviest track-mounted equipment in the aggregate industry:
- Kleemann Mobicone MCO series: The MCO 9, MCO 11, and MCO 13 cone crushers range from 70,000 to 140,000 pounds. The MCO 13 at 140,000 pounds is a superload in many states and requires engineering review before permits can be issued.
- Metso Lokotrack LT300 series: Secondary and tertiary cone crushers in the 100,000 to 160,000 pound range, requiring multi-axle transport trailers and superload permits for the largest models.
- Sandvik QH series: The QH331 and QH441 cone crushers — 90,000 to 125,000 pounds — typically require overweight permits and one or two pilot car escorts depending on the states traveled.
- Terex Finlay C-series: The C-1540, C-1540RS, and C-1550 cone crushers from 85,000 to 125,000 pounds, with extended transport dimensions when on-board conveyors are stowed.
Portable & Mobile Impact Crushers
Horizontal shaft impactors (HSI) and vertical shaft impactors (VSI) serve as primary, secondary, or tertiary crushers depending on material type and desired product gradation. - Terex Finlay 883+, 893, and 694+: Banana deck and multi-deck screens in the 40,000 to 70,000 pound range, with some models reaching 14 feet wide when hopper wings are deployed.
- Powerscreen Chieftain and Warrior series: Aggressive-screening and heavy-duty scalping screens from 30,000 to 65,000 pounds; the wider models require pilot car escorts in states that set overwidth escort thresholds at 12 feet.
- McCloskey S-series and R-series: Ranging from compact screening units to the 36×16 triple-deck models at 75,000 pounds.
Stationary Crusher Frames & Components
When a stationary quarry plant requires a crusher replacement or an entire processing circuit is being decommissioned and relocated, individual plant components must be disassembled and transported separately. A large stationary gyratory crusher frame — such as the Metso Superior or the FLSmidth Fuller-Traylor — can weigh 200,000 to 500,000 pounds as a complete unit and must be disassembled into mainshaft, head, mantle, concave segments, and shell sections for transport. Heavy mainshaft and head assemblies are common candidates for multi-axle hydraulic platform trailer transport when they exceed 80,000 to 100,000 pounds.
Belt Conveyors
Aggregate plants depend on belt conveyors to move material between crushing, screening, and stockpiling stages. Long portable conveyors and stationary conveyor gallery sections present a transport challenge primarily in length — a 100-foot conveyor gallery must travel on an extendable flatbed, often requiring overlength permits of 20 to 30 feet beyond standard legal lengths. Radial stackers, telescoping conveyors, and tripper conveyors in transport configuration can reach 60 to 80 feet overall, requiring overlength permits in every state on the route and careful attention to turning radius limitations on tight rural routes to quarry sites.
Quarry Drill Rigs
Surface blast-hole drills and crawler-mounted rotary drills used in hard rock quarry operations require transport between quarry pits or to rebuild facilities. Common models include the Epiroc Pit Viper series (PV-271, PV-275, PV-351), Atlas Copco DM45 and DML drill rigs, and Sandvik DR series and Pantera series units. Transport weights range from 150,000 to 500,000 pounds for large blast-hole drills, placing them firmly in superload territory. Sand & Gravel Washing Equipment
Sand classifiers, log washers, attrition cells, and dewatering screens used in sand and gravel processing operations must periodically move between sites or go to rebuild shops for maintenance. These units are often wide but light relative to their footprint — an 8-foot-diameter attrition cell on a frame can extend beyond the standard 8-foot-6-inch legal width — and require overwidth permits even when the weight is within legal limits.
Transport Methods for Quarry Equipment
The right trailer for aggregate and quarry equipment depends on dimensions and weight:
- RGN (Removable Gooseneck) trailers: The standard for drive-on track equipment like portable jaw crushers, cone crushers, and screen plants. The low deck height (18–24 inches at the well) keeps overall transport height manageable, and the drive-on loading minimizes crane and rigging requirements. Most portable crushing and screening plants load via their own tracks using the RGN's detachable neck.
- Multi-axle lowboys: For heavy stationary equipment components — crusher shells, mainshafts, large drive assemblies — that cannot drive on and must be crane-set, multi-axle lowboys with 3 to 7 axle lines provide the weight capacity needed without entering hydraulic platform trailer territory.
- Extendable flatbeds: For belt conveyor sections, conveyor gallery structures, and long radial stackers that are overlength but not overweight. Extendable trailers can reach 80 feet or more with proper permits.
- Hydraulic platform trailers (SPMT): For very heavy stationary gyratory crusher components or complete crusher assemblies that exceed the capacity of conventional lowboys. These configurations require separate Special Hauling Vehicle permits in many states in addition to standard oversize permits.
Oversize Permit Requirements for Quarry Equipment
Most portable crushing and screening plants require at least one — and often two or three — oversize permit categories when traveling on public highways:
- Overweight permits: Cone crushers, jaw crushers, and impact crushers in the 80,000 to 140,000 pound range exceed the federal 80,000-pound gross vehicle weight limit and require overweight permits from each state on the route. States have varying permit axle allowances — permit axle loads above federal statutory limits are allowed in most states on state highway systems with the appropriate permit.
- Overwidth permits: Many portable plants in road position are 12 to 16 feet wide. States set escort thresholds at different widths — commonly 12 feet, 14 feet, and 16 feet — with increasing pilot car requirements at each threshold. - Overlength permits: Long jaw crushers, conveyors, and scalpers in transport position regularly exceed 53-foot standard legal length, requiring overlength permits in every state on the route.
- Overheight permits: Cone crushers and screening plants with elevated discharge conveyors stowed vertically can reach 13 to 14 feet in height, requiring overheight permits in states with a 13-foot-6-inch legal height limit (most states) or a 14-foot limit (a smaller number of states).

Quarry Site Access Considerations
Quarry sites present access challenges that many highway freight moves do not encounter. Private haul roads to active quarry pits are often unpaved, steep, and narrow — optimized for the quarry's own haul trucks, not for an 80-foot extendable flatbed or a heavy lowboy with wide steering axles. Before booking a quarry equipment move, R&RM LLC asks about:
- The condition and grade of the site access road
- Any weight-restricted bridges on the route from the nearest public highway to the plant site
- Overhead clearances at site entrance gates and any structures along the haul road
- Whether a spotter or site escort is needed to guide the driver through the quarry
- Whether the site has a suitable hard-surface area for equipment spotting and any necessary crane rigging
