The Challenge
A crane rental company needed their Grove GMK6300L all-terrain crane repositioned from a completed industrial facility expansion project in Roanoke, Virginia to a bridge rehabilitation project in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The GMK6300L is a 300-ton-capacity all-terrain crane mounted on an 8-axle carrier — one of the larger all-terrain machines operating in the North American market. Its combination of highway-legal mobility (it drives itself between jobs) and substantial lift capacity makes it a workhorse for industrial, energy, and infrastructure contractors across the country.
Moving an all-terrain crane of this class is a multi-vehicle operation. The crane carrier travels under its own power, driven by the crane operator or a qualified driver, but its 108,000 lb travel weight far exceeds the federal 80,000 lb gross vehicle weight limit, requiring overweight permits in every state on the route. The boom sections — too long and too numerous to trailer with the carrier — travel on separate flatbeds. The main counterweight, which must be removed for highway travel, fills two additional flatbeds. Coordinating all seven vehicles across 870 miles with permits from four state DOT offices presented the core logistics challenge.
The crane owner's contract at the Grand Rapids bridge project had a hard mobilization date: the lift plan called for the GMK6300L on site and assembled by a specific morning, timed around a scheduled lane closure on the bridge approach. Missing that window would push the entire structural steel placement operation by a minimum of two weeks — an expensive delay affecting multiple subcontractors.
Our Solution
Transport Configuration Assessment
All-terrain cranes like the GMK6300L present a fundamentally different transport challenge than crawler cranes or other non-self-propelled equipment. The carrier is a purpose-built highway vehicle capable of traveling legally on public roads in its base configuration — but only if the gross vehicle weight is within state permit limits, which at 108,000 lbs it was not. We worked with the crane owner's operator to confirm the exact travel weight in the stripped configuration: main boom removed, all counterweight blocks removed, and the carrier reduced to its minimum transport weight.
The boom transport required three 53-foot flatbeds: one carrying the 12-meter base section and two insert sections, one carrying the remaining insert sections and the boom tip, and one carrying the luffing jib components and rigging accessories. The main counterweight blocks — removed to bring the carrier to its minimum travel weight — filled two additional flatbeds. This produced the 7-vehicle convoy (crane carrier plus 6 flatbeds) that would make the trip north together.
Multi-State Overweight Permit Coordination
The crane carrier's 108,000 lb gross weight required overweight permits in all four states on the route. Critically, all-terrain crane carriers have a fixed axle configuration — unlike a hydraulic platform trailer, you cannot redistribute weight across additional axles to reduce individual axle loads. The GMK6300L's 8 axles spread the 108,000 lbs as designed by Grove, and each state's permit office reviewed the axle group weights against their respective bridge formula requirements before issuing approval.
We submitted simultaneous permit applications to all four state DOT offices:
- Virginia DOT: Overweight permit for I-81 north from Roanoke through the Shenandoah Valley, then I-64 west to the West Virginia line. VDOT approved the standard overweight routing with no bridge restrictions on the planned path.
- West Virginia DOT: I-64 west then I-77 north through Charleston to the Ohio line. WVDOT required routing via the turnpike (I-77), which carries heavier bridge ratings than alternate routes through the state. A single WV turnpike authority permit covered the segment.
- Ohio DOT: The longest state segment — I-77 north to I-70 west to I-71 north to I-475 to I-196. ODOT's overweight permit process includes a route review for all loads over 105,000 lbs. ODOT approved the routing after verifying axle group weights against the bridge formula for posted structures on I-71 north of Columbus.
- Michigan DOT: I-196 east to the US-131 exchange in Grand Rapids. Michigan's permit office processed the application without restriction — the carrier's axle distribution was within MDOT's bridge formula limits for the interstate routing.
Total permit processing time was three business days, including same-day turnaround from VDOT and WVDOT. Our experience coordinating simultaneous multi-state permit applications — and knowing each state's specific documentation requirements before submitting — prevented the back-and-forth that typically adds a day or two to complex multi-state permit packages.
Convoy Coordination and Travel Planning
Moving seven vehicles together across 870 miles requires more coordination than a standard single-trailer oversize move. The convoy traveled in formation: a front pilot car (escort vehicle), then the crane carrier driven by the crane operator, followed by the six flatbeds in sequence. The pilot car carried a height pole to verify clearance at structures along the route and maintained radio contact with all convoy drivers throughout the trip.
We staged the convoy's overnight stops in advance — truck stops with adequate pull-through space for seven vehicles traveling together. Keeping the convoy together overnight is standard practice: splitting the group creates coordination problems the next morning and risks the carrier arriving at the job site before the boom flatbeds, which accomplishes nothing useful. Both overnight stops were confirmed before departure.
The flatbed loads carrying the boom sections were oversize in length — each flatbed with boom sections extended beyond 65 feet overall including the tractor. Ohio required an oversize-length permit for these loads in addition to the overweight permit for the carrier. We obtained these simultaneously with the overweight applications, adding no additional calendar time to the permit process.
Departure and Loading Coordination
The departure required careful staging at the Roanoke job site. The crane had already been disassembled by the rigging crew — boom sections laid out, counterweight blocks removed, and the carrier sitting in its transport configuration. Loading the boom sections onto the flatbeds is methodical work: sections must be loaded in a specific sequence so they unload in the correct order at the destination, allowing the assembly crew to work efficiently. We coordinated with the crane owner's rigging foreman on loading sequence before the flatbed drivers arrived at the site, so loading proceeded without downtime.
The carrier departed first, with the convoy forming behind it as each flatbed completed loading and passed the weight check at a nearby certified scale. The convoy was complete and in formation within four hours of the first vehicle's scheduled departure time.
