The Challenge
An earthmoving contractor in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex had completed a major highway interchange grading project and needed their Caterpillar 657G push-pull scraper relocated to a new highway widening job outside Springfield, Missouri. The project timeline was firm — the general contractor expected the machine on-site and operational within four days of the call, leaving no room for permit delays or routing problems.
The 657G is one of the largest earthmoving scrapers ever built by Caterpillar. In its twin-engine push-pull configuration, the machine stretches approximately 51 feet in overall length from push-block to tail-gate, stands roughly 14 feet tall at the cab, and tips the scale at 96,000 lbs empty. That combination of extreme length, significant height, and heavy weight placed the load well outside standard legal limits in all three transit states — Texas, Oklahoma, and Missouri — requiring coordinated oversize and overweight permits before the truck could depart.
An additional challenge: the machine had been working a tight job site and was parked in a staging area accessible only via a gravel service road with soft shoulders. Getting the 13-axle lowboy combination into position without getting it stuck required careful pre-loading site assessment and coordination with the contractor's equipment operator.
Our Solution
Pre-Move Site Assessment
Before scheduling the load day, our team walked the loading site with the customer's site foreman to confirm approach angles, turning radius requirements, and ground conditions. The gravel access road was adequate for the unladen trailer, but the staging area where the 657G was parked had soft clay subsoil under the gravel surface. We coordinated with the contractor to have the scraper operator self-propel the machine to the firmest ground available before the RGN arrived — moving it closer to the paved road and eliminating the soft-ground risk entirely.
Equipment Inspection & Load Prep
On load day, our driver performed a complete pre-load inspection. The 657G's push-block and elevator components were secured, the bowl was pinned in the travel position, all visible hydraulic lines were checked for leaks that could create a road hazard, and the machine's fuel tank was assessed — Texas regulations limit fuel loads on overweight permitted moves, so the operator drained excess fuel to maintain the lowest legal transport weight. The tail-lights and reflectors on the scraper's rear were confirmed visible with the machine loaded before final securement.
Permit Coordination
Our team secured permits from all three state DOTs:
- Texas DOT: Overweight single-trip permit for the US-287 corridor north through Wichita Falls to the Oklahoma state line. Texas requires 72-hour advance processing for loads over 80,000 lbs, which our team initiated immediately upon receiving the job order.
- Oklahoma DOT: Oversize and overweight permit for US-81 and I-44 through Oklahoma City and Tulsa. Oklahoma restricts overweight movements on some highway segments during spring weight-restriction season; our routing avoided all posted restriction corridors. The Oklahoma permit was issued within 24 hours.
- Missouri DOT: Overweight permit for I-44 from the Oklahoma border to Springfield. Missouri's central permit office processes standard overweight applications within one business day, allowing our timeline to stay on track.
Trailer Selection & Loading
A 13-axle multi-axle RGN lowboy was selected to distribute the 657G's 96,000-lb transport weight across enough axles to stay within per-axle limits in all three states. The RGN's removable gooseneck allowed the scraper operator to drive the machine onto the deck under its own power, eliminating the need for a crane at the loading site. Tie-down points were rigged at the front frame, rear axle housings, and bowl structure using rated chain binders. The oversized rear-engine hood required additional side-securement to prevent any wind-load movement on the long interstate stretches through Oklahoma.
Route Planning
The 520-mile route was planned to optimize travel time while respecting all permit corridor requirements:
- Texas: US-287 north from Fort Worth to Wichita Falls, then US-281 to the Oklahoma border. This route avoided the heavier bridge-restriction density on I-35 through Dallas and offered wider shoulders for the long combination.
- Oklahoma: US-81 to I-44 through Oklahoma City and Tulsa. The I-44 corridor is well-maintained and has fewer weight-restricted bridge segments than alternative routes.
- Missouri: I-44 straight to Springfield. The permit specified a maximum speed of 55 mph due to the machine's length and weight, with no travel permitted after sunset per Missouri oversize regulations.
Transport Execution
The scraper departed Fort Worth on day two of the project (day one was permit procurement and site assessment). Our driver maintained consistent communication throughout the transit, reporting position and condition at each state line crossing. The load reached the delivery site outside Springfield on schedule on day three. At the delivery site — a graded but not yet paved equipment staging area — the RGN's removable gooseneck was repositioned and the contractor's operator drove the 657G off the deck directly onto the new job site surface. No crane. No delays. The general contractor had the machine operational for a site mobilization meeting that same afternoon.
